Holidays and Problematic Behavior

The holiday season is often portrayed as a time of joy, connection, and celebration, yet for many men in recovery from unwanted sexual behavior, it becomes a period of heightened vulnerability. Holiday stress can stir emotional pressure, unresolved family tensions, financial burdens, and increased expectations—all of which can weaken spiritual vigilance and open the door to temptation. Scripture reminds us that stress and inner turmoil create moments when the enemy seeks advantage. “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour” (1 Peter 5:8). When stress rises, vigilance can diminish, making old coping mechanisms feel deceptively comforting.

The holidays also disrupt routine—travel, gatherings, and schedule changes often dismantle the structure that supports healthy recovery. Without consistent habits of prayer, accountability, and rest, the mind becomes weary. Jesus warned His disciples, “Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak” (Matthew 26:41). During stressful seasons, the flesh becomes even weaker, craving escape or emotional numbing, which sexual behavior can falsely promise.

Loneliness—ironically common during the holidays—can intensify this struggle. While others seem connected and content, a man battling internal wounds may feel isolated or unseen. In those moments, the enemy whispers that temporary pleasure will soothe the ache. Yet God gently calls His people to seek comfort in Him: “Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee” (Psalm 55:22). True relief is found not in escape but in surrender.

Ultimately, holiday stress exposes the deeper need for spiritual grounding. Replacing old coping patterns with prayer, Scripture meditation, and community strengthens the heart. As believers intentionally turn to Christ, they discover His sustaining grace even in the most emotionally demanding seasons.
